Chapter Twenty-Three

Lucius was nearing Denham. His love was so close that he could almost sense her, almost smell her. He could not wait to see her again, to hold her, to make love to her. That would be almost as intoxicating as using his newfound magic. His power was unlike any other, and each time he used the black and the white within him, he felt as if he was even mightier and greater.

Denham was in his sights as he entered the small villages that surrounded the actual city.

To his surprise, a small force gathered to stand in his way, a black mage and a white mage at the head of the group. Behind them were a dozen paladins and warriors. All were high levels and powerful in their own right. Still, Lucius didn’t shake or show any fear. They would be no match for him.

“Mage Lucius,” the black mage said. He appeared vaguely familiar, but his name slipped Lucius’ tongue.

“What do you want?” Lucius asked curtly, miffed that he had not been called by his true rank, that of Arch Mage.

“You have been killing people,” the white mage said in a nasally voice.

Lucius laughed. “And? I’ve been doing that for years. How do you think I got to such a high level to begin with?”

The black mage shifted on his horse. Most black mages had killed to gain levels, and that killing was not always of monsters.

The white mage glared at Lucius. “You attacked whole cities, killing all of their inhabitants. There have been rumors of necromancy and more. You are to be brought before the mages for justice.”

Lucius laughed, the loud, bellowing sound carrying far into the village. “I am the Arch Mage. You will bow to me and do as I say or die.”

“None can ever fulfill the prophecy,” the white mage declared.

“None will ever be the Arch Mage,” the black mage said.

Lucius reached for his mana and took both the black and the white. The fight was fierce and never any easier than before, but once he had control of the magic, he was unstoppable. Above his right hand floated a ball of fire and lightning, above his left a ball of healing water.

Both stared at him in shock and awe.

“I-It can’t be,” the black mage stuttered.

Lucius smirked. “It can, and it is. I am the Arch Mage.”

The mages saw the power in him, both the black and the white, and how much he could use. Their faces drained of color, and Lucius knew they realized they were no match for them. Still, they were duty-bound to bring him in.

Not that they would be able to.

“Attack,” the black mage command.

The force behind the mage launched into motion and went on the offensive. Lucius was already connected to his mana. How foolish was the lot to have allowed him to power up before the battle.

Each and every time he used his magic now was a way to test his ability. Lucius longed to push himself and his powers as much as possible.
